Coral Spawning This event, though not widely considered a large money making event for the Keys, is one of the reefs most interesting events. This is a night dive that will require a flexible schedule to catch this once a year event. August is the month, and shortly after the full moon, many of the corals will release both sperm and ovum completing their bi-sexual reproductive process. Though this may be small on your event calendar, it is never the less one the reefs most important events, after seeing the spawning you will be sure to add it to your most memorable dives. Luminescent Threadworm of June and July The annual breeding swarm of the Luminescent Threadworm which takes place within the last three days of the last quarter of the June and July moon is a delightful natural event. This worm, and some other species perform a spawning ritual in which the body becomes filled with eggs or sperms, and the worms swarm in plankton at night. During this ritual the Luminescent Threadworm displays a striking luminescent pattern of flashes similar to that of fireflies. Females, swimming in tight circles on the surface, light up at intervals of 10-20 seconds and produce a circle of light to which males are attracted. The male flashes briefly as he swims to center of the circle to spawn. At times there are thousands and thousands of worms creating a spectacular natural light show. A beautiful event that can be observed both in the water and out. Plan a fishing trip, a dive trip or both during natures wet light show. If you have any questions, feel free to call me, The Capt.
